The Harmony Youth program with the Arts and College Preparatory Academy has grown to a 90-minute weekly class focusing on diminishing the power of negative labels, and moving beyond tolerance to acceptance.

Students participating in Harmony Youth will learn and perform the Linda Perry song “Beautiful,” recorded by Christina Aguilera, and create a video for their fellow students to inspire other teenagers to embrace themselves, and release the negative stereotypes that go along with labeling others. The semester culminates in a special performance on stage at the historic Southern Theatre.

“Last year David Brown worked with our students for ten weeks and he turned them into a choir that not only sounded good, but did good. Most of the students he worked with were not affiliated with the school choir. David’s energy and engaging instruction allowed students who were not comfortable with singing in public to do just that. More importantly, David inspired them to serve their communities. Many of our students have difficult home lives, where aiding others is not necessarily at the forefront of their concerns. Students began to understand the importance of giving, a lesson that I believe will stay with them for a long time.”
